La Arquitectura Japonesa tiene edificios tradicionales, muy representativos de las religiones y de la historia milenaria de este país cuyas representaciones son castillos, templos y santuarios, y edificios modernos, de construcciones funcionales, austeras y minimalistas.
Sin embargo, no hay continuidad entre lo antiguo y lo moderno. La tradición japonesa tiene en su genética construir para pocos años, ya sea en la tradicional madera durante siglos, o con el hormigón y el metal, para ellos las construcciones son efímeras, lo importante es conservar la identidad, asimilando los cambios, haciéndolos suyos creando una japonesidad que los distingue hasta hoy.

Arquitectura Japonesa Religiosa.
Los primeros santuarios sintoístas japoneses son las tumbas y sitios de adoración sin edificio principal, muy conectados a espacios naturales.
En el siglo VI con la llegada del budismo, las formas nuevas de los templos de esa religión, fueron adoptadas en los santuarios sintoístas, como las curvas en los techos, corredores que conectan edificios y pagodas, aunque conservan algunas formas propias, como los arcos, los caminos o sando que van a los lugares sagrados, las protuberancias en el borde de los techos y los perros-leones que custodian el ingreso.
Con la aparición del budismo y el confucianismo los estilos arquitectónicos comenzaron a desarrollarse con la construcción de templos. En especial en Asuka y en Nara, donde esta el conjunto religioso budista más grande del país, que data del siglo VIII.
En este período la arquitectura japonesa desarrollo técnicas constructivas para conservar los templos de la destrucción de los terremotos, un sistema de soporte de vigas cuyo material principal era la madera. Los estilos Gran Buda (daibutsuyo) y Zen (zenshuyo) desarrollaron increíbles techos curvados que eran sostenidos por grandes vigas y pilares.
Arquitectura Japonesa Tradicional.
En general el estilo japonés se caracteriza por las construcciones livianas, la simpleza y la integración con el entorno, una expresión minimalista pura.
Estilo Shinden (Shinden-zukuri)
Utilizado por la nobleza, este estilo surge durante el periodo Heian (794-1185). Sus construcciones son cuadradas, el lugar principal (shinden) estaba en el centro. El gran espacio interior era muy simple y se subdividía con las pantallas móviles (shoji) de seda y bambú. Eran espacios fríos y carentes de iluminación natural.
Estilo Shoin (Shoin-zukuri)
Con el ascenso de la clase militar de los guerreros Samurai en el periodo Muromachi (1336–1573), se simplificaron las construcciones. El shoin es una gran habitación para funciones militares y sociales.
Estilo Sukiya (Sukiya-zukuri)
Adoptado por casas privadas, villas y casas de te el estilo Sukiya es más elegante e intimista. Se incluyen en su estructura elementos decorativos como los estantes, los frisos y los clavos ornamentales llamados kugikakushi.

Los métodos tradicionales japoneses se han disociado de la arquitectura japonesa que hoy refleja una marcada influencia internacional.
A partir del SXIX con la restauración Meiji, Japon se abrió a la influencia occidental, y es en el siglo XX, con la reconstrucción necesaria después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, que se desarrolló una arquitectura japonesa distintiva con sus patrones tradicionales como el carácter austero de las decoraciones, la integración con el entorno, la proliferación de patios y jardines interiores.
Kenzo Tange, admirador de Le Corbusier, fue unos de los arquitectos que integró conceptos tradicionales como los voladizos, para adaptarlos a estructuras modernas. El arquitecto y urbanista Fumihiko Maki planeó ciudades con espacios abiertos, un principio estético que proviene de la idea espacial del budismo.
La fusión con el paisaje siempre fue prioridad en la arquitectura japonesa, la composición armoniosa del espacio exterior generó la llamada corriente de arquitectura orgánica y el desarrollo de la búsqueda del equilibrio en el interiorismo del estilo Zen y el Feng Shui ha impactado al mundo con su filosofía.
Con un serio problema de escasez espacio físico en los centros urbanos se buscó desarrollar construcciones eficientes y económicas, en general verticales y de líneas simples, para nada ostentosas, una combinación de tradición e innovación.
Las casas inteligentes y los rascacielos modernos fueron desarrolladas a partir de ideas y técnicas de construcción de arquitectos japoneses.
Con gran integración de tecnología, Kisho Kurukawa diseño la Torre Nagakin en 1972, un edificio con conceptos ecológicos, cuyas cápsulas pueden desarmarse para sustituirlas fácilmente. Son las llamadas micro-housing, construidas con mobiliario integrado.
La creación de un estilo moderno japonés con conceptos occidentales de alta tecnología en edificios con las funcionalidades y decoraciones de Japón, se sintetizaron en la obra de Isozaki Arata, cuyos diseños influenciaron el la Nueva Onda en los años 80
El fin del siglo XX encuentra a la arquitectura japonesa con representantes extraordinarios como Tadao Ando, que desarrolló una disciplina mas orientada al humanismo, alejándose del modernismo estructural. Generando una nueva arquitectura urbana donde la entrada de la luz es un aspecto primordial, balcones, ladrillos de cristal, puentes y escaleras abiertas son distintivos en sus creaciones, volviendo a realzar la característica japonesa de fusionar los elementos del espacio exterior, como la luz y la vegetación, con las construcciones, dándole protagonismo a la Naturaleza.
