Salvaescaleras o ascensor, ¿cuál es mejor? ¿Cuál se adapta mejor a mis necesidades? ¿Cuál tarda menos tiempo en estar listo para usar? Excelentes preguntas.
Los ascensores, históricamente, se han asociado al lujo. Están presentes en prácticamente cualquier edificio, centro comercial e inmueble moderno. Son la solución por excelencia cuando hay, al menos, más de dos plantas.
Las salvaescaleras, al contrario, están ganando popularidad en los hogares con personas con movilidad limitada. Son cómodas, funcionales, económicas y adaptables.
Si estás pensando elegir entre una salvaescalera o ascensor, te ayudamos a decidir con esta publicación. Utilizaremos ciertos parámetros que nos permiten medir la viabilidad de instalación entre un mecanismo y otro.
Salvaescaleras o ascensor, ¿cuál es mejor?
Antes de elegir entre un sistema de transporte para interiores, debemos pensar algunas cosas: modelos, costo de instalación, necesidades de los usuarios, duración de la aceptación, etc. Veamos cada punto y comparémoslos según la naturaleza del mecanismo.
Modelo
Lo primero que debemos tener en cuenta al elegir entre un salvaescalera y un ascensor es el modelo. Cada dispositivo cuenta con diversos modelos que se adaptan a las necesidades del inmueble y a las de los usuarios.
En el caso de los ascensores tenemos:
- Ascensores convencionales. Son los de toda la vida. Bajan y suben diferentes plantas mediante un sistema de cableado, motor y botones.
- Ascensores unifamiliares. También conocidos como ascensores de velocidad reducida, son ascensores que se desplazan a una velocidad máxima de 15 cm cada segundo. Se recomienda para hogares con 2-3 plantas.
- Bases verticales. Son ascensores sin cabina que se desplazan de manera vertical. Generalmente se utilizan para transportar objetos y materiales pesados, pero también funciona para movilizar a las personas de un punto a otro.
En el caso de salvaescaleras, podemos elegir entre:
- Sillas. Las sillas salvaescaleras son asientos que se desplazan por un sistema de rieles conectado a las escaleras. Son fáciles de manejar, cómodas y económicas.
- Plataformas. Los modelos de plataformas salvaescaleras cuentan con una base que se desplaza por las escaleras mediante un mecanismo de rieles adaptado. Es ideal para las personas en silla de rueda.
Necesidades
Piensa: ¿para qué quieres un salvaescaleras o ascensor? Los ascensores reducen la cantidad de esfuerzo físico al no tener que subir las escaleras. Las salvaescaleras, en cambio, son diseñadas para personas con movilidad reducida, como los adultos mayores y pacientes con discapacidad.
Considera si realmente necesitas un ascensor para ayudar a una persona con discapacidad, analiza tus necesidades y escoge la mejor solución de accesibilidad y movilidad.
Viabilidad
También debes tener en cuenta el tipo de inmueble. No es lo mismo instalar ascensores en centros comerciales y edificios que en hogares con más de una planta.
Un edificio –al menos que sea muy antiguo– cuenta con suficiente espacio para acoplar un ascensor. Incluso vienen con el pozo, la sala de máquinas, etc.
Si se trata de un hogar común y corriente, es posible que no tenga espacio para la instalación de un ascensor. Hay que crearlo y eso implica dinero, reformas, cambios de estéticas, etc.

Transporte
En este punto queremos destacar la cantidad de personas que usarán la salvaescalera o el ascensor. Algo que está conectado con los parámetros mencionados.
Si se trata de un edificio donde frecuentan propietarios y visitante, evidentemente necesita un ascensor o al menos una plataforma salvaescalera.
En cambio, si es para que un adulto mayor o persona con discapacidad se movilice de un punto a otro mediante las escaleras, entonces la elección es obvia.
Tiempo de duración
Al escoger entre ascensor o salvaescaleras debemos pensar en la duración de la instalación. ¿Cuánto tarda cada mecanismo? Veamos.
- La instalación de un ascensor, teniendo en cuenta las obras y las reformas, trabajos eléctricos, acople del motor, si tiene hueco o no, puede tardar entre un mes o dos.
- El tiempo de instalación de un salvaescaleras dependerá del mecanismo de rieles. Si es de tramo de recto o de tramo con cambios de pendiente. En el primero los trabajos son menores y está listo a la semana. En el segundo, dado que los rieles tienen que adaptarse a las curvas, el tiempo asciende a 14-15 días.
Costo
¿Y cuál es más costoso?
En el caso del ascensor, si ya se tiene un hueco y solo necesita trabajos de instalación, el monto oscila entre 15.000 € y 75.000 €. Si no hay agujero en la fachada, entonces este monto crece entre 85.000 € y 145.000 €.
Los precios salvaescaleras para discapacitados son más accesibles. Las sillas cuestan, aproximadamente, entre 1.500 € y 10.000 €. Las plataformas, en cambio, cuestan entre 6.500 € y 16.000 €.
