La arquitectura romana es un legado dejado por los antiguos arquitectos del mundo griego que representaban el respeto romano y a su tradición. Este tipo de arquitectura es una reverencia particular por las órdenes arquitectónicas establecidas en el mundo antiguo.  Esto es evidente en muchos de sus grandes edificios públicos. Sin embargo, los romanos también son considerados unos grandes innovadores que adoptaron técnicas nuevas de construcción, empleando materiales y combinando de manera única ya existentes con un diseño creativo de por medio. Lo mejor de lo anterior es la creatividad que estos infundían para producir una alta gama de nuevas estructuras como la basílica, arco triunfar, acueducto monumental y el anfiteatro.

Muchas de estas innovaciones creadas en la arquitectura romana fueron respuesta de las necesidades cambiantes en la sociedad romana, que fueron respaldados por un parte del aparato estatal encargado de aprobar o reprobar proyectos de los arquitectos. Estos lo financiaban, organizaban y posteriormente lo extendían por todo el mundo romano para que tuviera el conocimiento y aclamación adecuada. También garantizaban su permanencia a través de la conservación de grandes edificios. Lo anterior se puede constatar ya que hasta el día de hoy se evidencian en el mundo moderno.

Al igual que el arte y otros aspectos de la cultura romana, la arquitectura primitiva tomó un auge intenso y referencias de la arquitectura griega. Sin embargo, los romanos adaptaron rápidamente las estructuras a su propio estilo, que posteriormente inspiraron a otros países. La arquitectura romana es un reflejo del carácter práctico, energía inquieta y mentalidad organizativa de casa uno de los creadores, o arquitectos, que a venían con una idea firme del arte romano. A medida que el imperio romano se expandió, para abarcar no solo la región mediterránea, sino también grandes áreas de Europa Occidental, los arquitectos romanos lucharon por lograr dos objetivos principales:

Lo primero es demostrar la grandeza que tenía Roma en aquél momento, y segundo el poder que podía suponer a cada uno de sus rivales a través de la capacidad e hacer cosas que no otros consiguen. Con este fin, fueron capaces de dominar una serie de técnicas y estilos arquitectónicos importantes, entre los que se incluyen el arco, la cúpula y la bóveda. Otro aspecto importante que adoptaron para darle el toque único a su arquitectura, fue el uso del hormigón.

A través de estos métodos, los ingenieros de la antigua Roma, diseñaron los mejores edificios públicos que se conocían en toda la historia de la arquitectura en aquella época. La cual de verdad era mucha, incluyendo la griega que había dejado boquiabierta a muchos ingenieros. Para reforzar aún más los ideales de Roma y su poder, pero sobre todo para mantener la eficiencia y el orden, los arquitectos romanos diseñaron numerosos acueductos, sistemas de drenaje y puentes con vistas a las obras de modo que las personas que recorrieran las calles se impresionaran ante grandes infraestructuras.

Historia de la arquitectura romana

El estado romano, así como la república y el imperio, respaldó, financió y organizó muchas de las infraestructuras alrededor de la esfera romana hace ya 2.000 años. Los edificios que se construyeron quedaron muy bien, esto debido a los materiales duraderos que hacían que casi todas las estructuras conocidas de la arquitectura romana se mantuvieran hasta el día de hoy. En lo anterior se puede ver la evidencia de la mano de las autoridades, ya que no todas las esculturas o construcciones tenían las mejores manos o los mejores materiales. Se puede decir, que sin su intervención, la arquitectura romana no tuviera la aclamación y admiración que tiene hoy.

Las personas, en el mundo moderno, todavía se maravilla con los ejemplos de la arquitectura romana, como por ejemplo el Panteón o el Coliseo romano, así como un centenar de otros lugares espectaculares, desde los acueductos construidos en lo que hoy conocemos como España e Italia, hasta los anfiteatros de muchas ciudades antiguas que se extienden desde España hasta Egipto a través de África.

Una de las adiciones más importante que la población romana aportó a la historia de la arquitectura fue el arco, que originalmente fue un préstamo de los etruscos. Para su construcción se empleó el hormigón, ladrillos y gracias al concepto del arco, los ingenieros de Roma pudieron proporcionar agua a muchos de sus ciudadanos. Los acueductos se construyeron en Roma, pero sus estructuras de arco llevaban agua a áreas alejadas de los suministros naturales de muchos otros lugares lejos de la parte central del imperio. Lo que habla de la capacidad de grandeza que tenían estar arquitecturas.

Características generales de la arquitectura romana

Los romanos se conjugaron muy bien con la cultura griega a través del entusiasmo, lo que concluyó en la base de la cultura romana y su arquitectura. En consecuencia a esa ligada admiración hacia dicha cultura, las formas romanas de arte surgieron en gran medida por la adopción la remodelación minuciosa de los modelos griegos que estaban en boca de todos. En términos arquitectónicos, esto implicaba una adopción de los estilos básicos de los templos griegos.

Sin embargo, por mucho que tuvieran inspiración y se abrazaran entre sí, la arquitectura romana se distingue fácilmente de sus predecesores griegos. Los romanos en general fueron una civilización con mucha inteligencia y capacidad para explotar por completo el concepto de la construcción arqueada. Este tipo de estilo demanda en que un techo tiene que estar soportado por arcos. Siempre y cuando se encuentren en oposición a la construcción de los postes o vigas, en el que un techo se asiente directo sobre las columnas.

Y, aunque pueda sonar complicado, la construcción de manera arqueada es relativamente simple, por ejemplo piense en Mesopotamia donde era común. Pero, a pesar de haber aclarado lo anterior, hay lugares donde este tipo era ausente, como en la misma Grecia.

Otras de las características de la arquitectura romana son los soportes verticales que a menudo eran denominados ‘pilares’. Este consistía en un soporte circular, conocido como columnas, mientras un soporte cuadrado o rectangular lo sujetaba, llamado muelles. En aquellos tiempos no existía el armazón de acero. Por lo que el espacio interior de una estructura de postes y vigas se necesitaba lleno de columnas. Por otro lado, los arcos eran capaces de redirigir el peso de un edificio a través de largas distancias a postes gruesos. Permitiendo habitaciones amplias relativamente libre de obstáculos.

Materiales

En cuanto a los materiales que utilizaban los ingenieros y arquitectos para dar pie a la gran arquitectura romana, se incluyen la piedra y el hormigón. Aunque, de acuerdo a las primeras civilizaciones, ya existía este tipo de material. Pero, fueron los romanos quienes hicieron uso de ellos para dar pie a la construcción. Los muros de hormigón  a menudo se encontraban recubiertos con revestimiento a base de piedra o ladrillo.

Por otro lado, para los edificios, los romanos utilizaron mármol y ladrillo como materiales de la arquitectura romana. El anfiteatro romano es un gran ejemplo de una estructura romana única a base de estos materiales. Los grandes edificios se utilizaron para luchas de gladiadores, carreras de carros, ejecuciones públicas y otros eventos. Se datan más de 230 anfiteatros extendidos en toda Roma, en el que algunos de estos modelos podían albergar 60.000 espectadores.

Construidos en piedras, los anfiteatros típicamente poseen forma de grandes óvalo. Algunos tenían un nivel de asientos y muchos otros parecían algo similar a un estadio de fútbol moderno. El más grande e impresionante es sin duda el Coliseo, ubicado en la mismísima Roma.

Técnicas de la arquitectura romana

Como ya se mencionó anteriormente, la técnica del arco y la bóveda fueron la base de la ingeniería romana, que es un desarrollo alejado de la antigua Grecia. Estos fueron la base del arte en el que los pueblos romanos pudieron superar a los demás. Empleando otras técnicas como las de saldo, utilizadas para las formas geométricas simples. Como la bóveda de cañón semicircular, la bóveda de la ingle y la bóveda segmentaria. Las superficies de estas bóvedas estaban típicamente cubiertas con estuco o azulejos.

Los romanos confiaron en gran medida en sus técnicas para crear grandes infraestructura. Como los baños de Diocleciano, Panteón de Adriano y los Baños de Caracalla. La característica principal del diseño arquitectónico romano fue la construcción compleja de cúpulas para adaptarse a los planos de tierra multilobulados.
