El arte gótico es la denominación del estilo artístico que se desarrolló en Europa occidental durante los últimos siglos de la edad media, es decir, desde mediados del siglo XII hasta que surge el renacimiento en el siglo XV. Características de la arquitectura gótica
La arquitectura gótica está enmarcada en dos características generales, las cuales son:
- La verticalidad: la elevación, la gran altura e increíble esbeltez de la arquitectura gótica simboliza el deseo de ascensión hacia Dios.
- La luminosidad: con las innovaciones arquitectónicas del gótico el muro pierde su papel estructural siendo sustituido por las vidrieras, ya que el nuevo sistema constructivo concentra los empujes en puntos concretos transformando los muros en recubrimientos exteriores no en soportes.
Principales edificios de la arquitectura gótica
En la arquitectura gótica se distinguen los siguientes edificios principales:
- Catedrales: preside las ciudades y es el edificio más representativo, contrastando con la iglesia rural o los monasterios del románico. La planta está constituida de tres o cinco naves principalmente, el crucero sobresale poco y está más centrado que en las catedrales románicas. En la cabecera se puede distinguir entre el presbiterio y el coro. Destaca la altura de las naves sobretodo la central, el claristorio es un tercer cuerpo recubierto de grandes ventanales con vidrieras, donde se puede ver la obsesión gótica por la luminosidad. Las torres son de elevación desmesurada, se dividen en varios cuerpos y están culminadas por un remate agudo y calado con tracería gótica, llamado chapitel o aguja.
- Arquitectura civil: durante el gótico la arquitectura civil representa un notable desarrollo. Principalmente destacan dos tipos de edificio, los ayuntamientos o palacios y las lonjas destinadas a las transacciones comerciales.
Elementos constructivos principales de la arquitectura gótica
- Arco apuntado u ojival: con menor empuje lateral, que el de medio punto. Generalmente, aparece decorado con tracería calada en los vanos.
- Bóveda de crucería u ojival: es un elemento principal de este estilo, que revoluciona la arquitectura y permite realizar construcciones con alturas considerables. Está compuesto por un esqueleto de nervios o arcos cruzados, que desvían los empujes a cuatro puntos. Los tipos de bóveda son: bóveda cuatripartita de arista reforzada con nervios, bóveda sexpartita, la más común, bóveda octopartita, bóveda de terceletes con nervios secundarios, bóveda estrellada con estructura de nervios cada vez más complicados, bóveda de abanicos, característica del gótico inglés, extremadamente recargada.
- Pilar baquetonado: se trata de un pilar, cuyos elementos se complican al multiplicarse los nervios de las bóvedas, ya que son su continuación. Estas son columnas muy estrechas llamadas baquetones, adosadas al pilar, pero el pilar baquetonado sólo recoge los empujes verticales y no son suficientes porque quedan los oblicuos.
- Otros elementos para empujes laterales: uno de ellos es el arbotante, que es una especie de arco exterior que es el encargado de recoger los empujes oblicuos y conducirlos hacia los contrafuertes. El contrafuerte en el gótico está aislado, es exento y no está adosado al muro es el encargado de trasladar los empujes del edificio al suelo. El pináculo es otro elemento que tiene una función generalmente decorativa, el cual corona el contrafuerte, pero también tiene función constructiva al contrarrestar los empujes laterales con su empuje vertical.
Decoración en la arquitectura gótica
El edificio gótico no sólo se impone por su altura y luminosidad sino también por su riqueza de formas y recargamiento ornamental. Los temas o marcos en los que se encuentra la decoración de la arquitectura gótica son:
- Tracería gótica: se basa en motivos decorativos geométricos que enmarcan o cierran los vanos, generalmente dominan las formas treboladas, aunque se pueden encontrar otras como las flamígeras cuando asemejan llamas.
- Naturalistas: en este se encuentran los temas vegetales que ornamentan capiteles, frisos o arquivoltas. También, se encuentran representaciones animalísticas con gran naturalismo, aunque se siguen representando seres fantásticos y bestias monstruosas como se hacía en el románico. Otro tema es a figura humana que sigue una línea naturalista y se concentra en los capiteles, retablos, portadas y vanos.
